As a young girl, Cerise Allen thought Barbie looked particularly good sporting a crewcut.
She delighted in trimming the golden locks off her dolls and fashioning their hair into new works of art.
It was an early indication that she was destined for a life in hairdressing.
The 21-year-old recently won the regional hairdressing section of the Worldskills competition, held at West Wollongong TAFE.
Worldskills is an organisation that conducts skill competitions in more than 50 trade and skill areas, from hairdressing to bricklaying and autobody refinishing.
In the competition, Miss Allen performed a cut, colour and blow dry on a live model, and a day style and creative long hair style on a mannequin.
She clinched the gold from 12 other competitors, and said it was satisfying to succeed in a career which she had set her eyes on from a very young age.
``After I cut my dolls' hair off I used to throw them on top of the wardrobe," she said.
``I used to get into trouble because my dolls went missing all of the time.
``At school, I also used to cut all of my friends hair over a lunch box."
She will travel to Newcastle in October to compete in the national competition, and the national winner will travel to Switzerland next year to compete in the world competition.
She said she enjoyed working at Hair at Northview at Unanderra and was confidently looking forward to the challenge of the competition.
``Hopefully, I'll win at the national competition and get to travel overseas," she said.
