Hawkes Wins For 'outsiders'

CRAIG TOMPSON

TRAINER John Hawkes was back in the winner's circle but the all cerise of the Crown Lodge supremos, Jack and Bob Ingam, was missing after Bold Chief won the Oaks Hotel Neutral Bay Superfecta (1,300m) at Rosehill yesterday.

Hawkes, while training principally for the Ingham brothers, has always had "outside" owners.

Lately, he has been enjoying some success in that area with recent winner Macrosa also owned by outside interests.

Stable spokesman, Peter Snowden, suggested the stable had "about 10 or 15" horses not owned by the Inghams.

Bold Chief (5-2), who is owned by B.E. McCabe, Mrs W.P. Fletcher, G.M. Peoples, J.R. Scot, F.L. Kerr and T. Carter, continued his promising rise through the grades with a tenacious effort.

His victory took his record to eight wins from only 17 starts.

The future looks rosy for the Victory Prince gelding, who is still green according to his rider John Powell.

"He wants to stargaze when he gets to the front," Powell said.

"He did it at Newcastle last start and did it again today."

Indeed it was noticeable that Bold Chief shifted about significantly in the straight but was in no danger of hampering runner-up Square The Circle who was finishing on strongly out very wide.

Square The Circle had given his rider, Corey Brown, a scare at the start when he reared and threw the jockey out of the back of the stalls.

However, once the race started, Square The Circle produced a much improved showing after being specked in the betting from 15-1 to start at 14-1.

Pragmatism, resuming from a long spell, caught the eye with his strong third.

He is unbeaten as a second-up performer, so should be worth following at his next run.

Disappointment of the race was the 13-8 favourite Quick Flick, ridden by Mark de Montfort, which finished fourth.
